AR-News: (CA-mb/US) BSE border ban hurting Canadian zoos

Winnipeg - Canada's zoos are caught in the middle of the mad cow scare,
because the U.S. has not only closed its border to Canadian cattle, but to
giraffes and reindeer.
Washington's ban applies to all ruminants animals that have hooves and
multiple stomachs.
"I think to some extent we're all sort of absorbing the impact of the
various bans that have been put into place," David Banks, of the Calgary
Zoo, said.
Zoos in North America co-operate in breeding programs. That work is
continuing, at least in a lopsided fashion, because, unlike the U.S.,
Canada has not restricted giraffes, for example, from crossing the border.
