TYNGSBORO Paula Recco is awaiting a closed-door hearing tomorrow that will
determine whether she will face criminal charges that she neglected her
horses.

Recco is also going through a trial by a jury of peers: horse lovers who
have flooded Internet bulletin boards to praise her compassion and say she
is the target of a vendetta, and others who question her story and skewer
her for what they call poor treatment of her horses.

Just about all of those posting messages agree that Recco is a nice
person. But the agreement ends there.

The Internet conversation started to get nasty weeks ago, with people
posting comments about Recco that her stepdaughter, Michelle Richter,
describes as slanderous.

"Some of the stuff got really nasty," Recco said. "People were
unbelievable with some of their comments."

More than 400 messages have been posted in just one thread, or discussion,
on the site www.equinesite.com Two other threads were removed because
posters pointed personal attacks at Recco and one another, Richter said.
