Sharpshooters to begin killing parks' whitetail in February or March
By Bob Downing
Beacon Journal staff writer
Plans are proceeding to shoot white-tailed deer in Akron's metro parks in
late February or early March.
It would be the first time that Metro Parks, Serving Summit County has
attempted to thin the herd.
Sites in the four parks are being selected and special training is being
provided to park personnel, said Michael Johnson, chief of natural resources
management for the park district.
The number of deer to be killed by the sharpshooters in Sand Run and Cascade
Valley parks in Akron, Silver Creek park in Norton and Munroe Falls park in
Munroe Falls has not yet been finalized, he said.
That number will be set in early February so the park district can seek a
required permit from the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Park officials last fall spoke of shooting several hundred deer to protect
the park's biodiversity, its plants and other animals that are being threatened
by hungry deer. Other options were studied and rejected.
