Jan 26):
By Sinéad O'Kitty and Siouxsie Mew
Since it's been so cold outside (and inside, too, because Mama turns down the
heat when she goes to Work!), we decided that this week we need to write
about something that makes us think of the warmer times ahead. So today we're
going to talk about the birds and the bees, kitty style! We'll talk about
reproductive biology in depth, but we will be using proper scientific terms rather
than slang. We know that some humans are uncomfortable talking about reproduction
and sex, but we feel it's important for people who take care of cats to
understand the cat's biology and how cats reproduce, so that humans can make more
informed decisions about spaying or neutering their cat companions. If this
type of talk bothers you, we apologize, and if you send us letters, we promise
we'll talk about other topics in the weeks to come!
Sinéad: First, let's talk about the basics of feline reproductive anatomy.
Like female humans, female cats have a uterus, ovaries, and a vagina. The
difference is that cats' reproductive organs are a lot smaller--of course--and cat
uteruses (uteri?) are shaped like the letter Y instead of like an upside-down
pear like a human uterus.
