"You see them and you have to love them," says Bittner, a gentle man with a 
unruly mop of brown hair tinged with silver, which makes such a fine roost it 
is immediately taken up by one of the conures. Another perches on his arm, 
while still another stretches from a branch to pluck a sunflower seed from 
Bittner's lips. 
So arranged, Bittner, 52, puts forth a rather flimsy argument that he isn't 
at all eccentric. 
"Before this happened, I wasn't a bird person at all," he said. "The funny 
thing is that this was just a diversion at a time when my struggle was painful 
and slow. Then they started taking over my life."
