Zoo educator Nancy Shives displayed a box turtle. School at the Zoo lessons
often include demonstrations of animals.
Moore Traditional Middle School students Allison Nichols, 13, left, and
Jerrica Mayes, 12, were amused at the antics of Stevie the pygmy goat as it waved
a hoof at them at the Louisville Zoo.
A dozen seventh-graders lined up along a rail at the Louisville Zoo, craning
to hear docent Karl Baker talk about the ostriches that live in a grassland
ecosystem.
"These birds can run 35 mph," he said as the students, visibly impressed,
trotted off to visit lions and later horned goats, which they were able to pet as
they imagined them crossing an African plain.
