Dear Quack's Corner: I want to get a rabbit for a house pet. I'll take good
care of it and take it to the vet's to be fixed. I want a lop eared rabbit, but
I was told they have problems with their ears. I really like them, is this
true? -- A.V.

Dear A.V.: If you purchase or adopt a lop, you will just have to give this
pet a little extra care and attention to his surrounding. A lop rabbit has
droopy ears instead of the typical stand up bunny ears. The English lop has really
huge ears that drag across the floor. So whatever floor your bunny's kept on
must be kept very clean. You need to check the ears daily to make sure the
bottoms have not become irritated. These ears also hang in the water bowl, and
then collect dust and particles on the damp ears. These type of ears are also
more prone to mites and cuts than the erect ear. They are adorable, so if you
have the time to devote a little extra attention to their ears, they should have
no problems. Please be sure to purchase a good book on the care and health
problems of rabbits. If you need any information on adopting a rescue rabbit or
need advice on their care, contact: South Jersey Rabbit and Small Animal Rescue
at (856) 845-9633.
