COLUMBUS -- An Akron-area lawmaker wants everyone to know where the beef is.

Sen. Kevin Coughlin, R-Cuyahoga Falls, has proposed making the hamburger
the state's official food, putting it on par with the Buckeye (the state
tree), the ladybug (the state insect) and tomato juice (the state beverage).

The new designation would cost nothing, and Coughlin said the whole
process has very little beef in it.

"But the fact is these symbol bills do serve to help define who we are,"
he said. "It draws out a bit of our heritage. Hamburgers have been a major
part of our economy."

Ohio is home to two major fast-food burger chains: Wendy's and White Castle.
...
Coughlin said he is not worried about that controversy, or the possibility
the recent mad cow disease scare in Washington might dampen enthusiasm for
a state-endorsed sandwich.
