SUPHAN BURI, Thailand, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Bird flu-stricken Thailand's
emergency cull of millions of chickens by stuffing them in sacks and
burying them alive is coming under criticism from animal rights activists
as inhumane.
...
Destined in normal times for dinner tables in Europe and Japan, the
chickens were bundled five to a sack and dumped on a dusty road outside. A
bulldozer nudged them into a four-metre deep pit coated with lime and
shoved earth over them.
...
Animal rights activists said many people were shocked by television
pictures of the chicken cull in Thailand, where the most devout of
Buddhists will not kill a mosquito.
"Many people have called us to ask us to do something," said Chisanu
Tiyacharoensri of the Thai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
