The authorities have stepped up security measures at the Malaysia-Thailand
border to prevent the smuggling in of chicken after its import was banned by the
Government following the detection of bird flu in Thailand.
Round-the-clock patrolling and discreet observation are being adopted along
major roads to check lorries arriving from Thailand.
Kedah Anti-Smuggling Unit commander Abdul Rahim Ismail said his officers
would work with the marine police to check all boats landing at Kerpan, Kuala
Sanglang, Kuala Kedah, Tanjung Dawai and Pantai Kuala Muda.
He said there were traders who were not bothered by the threat of bird flu.
"They just want to cash in on the high demand during Hari Raya Haji."
Meanwhile, a spokesman of the Pengkalan Hulu Anti-Smuggling Unit in Perak said besides
increasing the number of observation points along the East-West Highway in the
State, discreet observation tactics would be used to check lorries carrying
the banned products.
