Monkeys are also important to the world of science. Rhesus monkeys, for
example, are used in research because their physiology is similar to that of
humans, thus making comparison and extrapolation of any scientific findings easier
and, at times, more accurate.

Rhesus monkey have also been used in numerous scientific experiments and
expeditions, including high-altitude tests.

The common usage of the term Rhesus (Rh) factor in categorising human blood
sub-types is a testimony how vital monkeys are to science. Monkeys are also
known to be involved in the transmission of a number of diseases, including AIDS.

In 1999, for example, it was reported in Nature (Feb 4, 2003) that it was
possible that "an endangered subspecies of chimpanzee is the source of the virus
that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans".
