Dog's rescue sparks effort to build shelter
By PATRICIA LYNCH KIMBRO
The (Gallatin) News Examiner PORTLAND — Miracle, the dog rescued from a
sealed barrel, has a permanent home and has become the poster pet for a proposed
animal shelter in Portland.
Larry and Gail Jones, the Portland couple serving as Miracle's foster
parents, have been allowed to adopt the Labrador retriever mix. They had been caring
for Miracle since he was released from an animal hospital in mid-December.
The Joneses said they continue to receive at least 50 telephone calls and
e-mails per day concerning Miracle, who survived several days in a 55-gallon drum
left at the Portland city garage.
Callers also are interested in helping build the ''Miracle Humane Shelter''
in Portland to provide treatment for abused animals and find adoptive parents.
A fund established at Volunteer State Bank for Miracle's medical care has
reached more than $5,000. A separate fund also has been created at the bank.
People donating to either fund should make sure their checks say which fund for
which the money is intended.
A Portland businessman, Larry Bandy, 61, was charged earlier this month with
aggravated cruelty in Miracle's case. He has said in interviews he is not
guilty.
Bandy, who owns rental properties in Portland, is free on $5,000 bail. He is
scheduled to appear Feb. 4 in Sumner County General Sessions Court.
