When a couple splits up, what happens to their beloved pets? Who gets the
dog? What about the cat?

Pet custody is likely more common in the U.S. not only because that nation
is more litigious, but also because of the growing pet rights movement
south of the border, Cossman explains.

As momentum builds to recognize the legal entitlement of pets (i.e. pets
as people, not property), pet custody disputes will become more accepted.
Animal law classes are already taught at numerous American law schools,
including Harvard, Yale, UCLA and Duke.
