The population of highly endangered mountain gorillas in the Virunga region
of the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen by 17%, according to a new census
by the African Wildlife Foundation. Fifty-six more gorillas have been
recorded since the last investigation in 1989, bringing the area’s population up to
380 individuals.

The jump in numbers comes in spite of several serious threats to the
gorillas, including poaching, destruction of habitat and widespread civil unrest in
nearby Rwanda.
