TANYA NOLAN: From American sugar to American beef and it seems predictions
of a windfall for Australian farmers, from a recent outbreak of mad cow
disease in the United States, have come true. The decision by Asian
countries to cancel their US beef contracts has delivered Australian
cattle producers multi-billion-dollar contracts. But in the US, beef
producers aren't too concerned.
North America Correspondent Leigh Sales reports for PM from the Mid
Western state of Iowa.
LEIGH SALES: As farmer Glen Rowe trudges outside in his gumboots to give
his cows a morning feed, he pulls his beanie down further over his ears,
and flips the hood on his thick jacket. He's hoping for protection from
the subzero temperature and frigid wind, as we slosh through the thick mud
to reach the feed trough.
...
LEIGH SALES: Initially, America's farmers feared the worst. They weren't
sure where the case had come from, or if it was isolated. In December, in
the first week after the case was announced, cattle prices dropped 20 per
cent.
But since then, there's been a swift recovery and the market's almost back
to where it was. That's because surprisingly, since the mad cow scare,
beef consumption in America has actually gone up by one per cent.
