AR-News: (IN) Job losses mount in US over mad cow disease

With the US economy sliding and joblessness increasing, the latest to join
the long line of the unemployed are those in America's meatpacking
industry following an outbreak of the mad cow disease.

Soon after the Department of Agriculture announced the discovery of mad
cow disease in Washington state in December, over 40 countries, including
Japan and Mexico, banned US beef and cattle prices dropped about 18 per cent.

As a result, meatpacking plants from Minnesota to Texas and from Iowa to
Idaho have since cut jobs because some of the "secondary" meats they
produce -- such as beef tongue and intestines -- primarily go to
international markets.
