AR-News: (AU) Rodeo protest 'a success'

A PROTEST against the calf roping/rope and tie event at a rodeo in Tamworth 
on Thursday night was brief but successful, according to Animal Liberation.
Two Maitland women aged 22 and 54 ran into the arena with a banner bearing 
the words, "Calf roping animal abuse", after the event got underway at the 
Tamworth showgrounds.
The group's objective, which failed, was to force organisers of the 
Australian Bushmen's Campdraft and Rodeo Association finals rodeo to cancel the event.
Animal Liberation executive officer Mark Pearson said the women were in the 
arena for 
no more than about 15 seconds before they were grabbed 
by police.
Amid loud jeers from the crowd, the pair was cautioned for trespassing and 
escorted from the arena.
A police spokesman said the pair was walked to their car for protection 
against retaliation from crowd members.
Nevertheless Mr Pearson said the group felt the protest was effective despite 
the audience's hostile reaction.
