DOG FIGHTERS FACE THE HEAT:
A huge dog fighting bust in Georgia has netted illegal firearms, drugs, more than $25,000 and 123 arrests on charges of felony animal cruelty, dog fighting and illegal gambling. When police raided the house in Covington on Saturday, they found a blood-soaked fighting arena with a dead dog alongside it and another dog so badly wounded that she was later euthanized.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, February 3, notorious dogfighter James Fiarris will be sentenced for felony dogfighting charges in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Fiarris pleaded guilty to the felony charges last year, following a lengthy investigation in which authorities found dozens of bloody, scarred fighting dogs on his property, along with dogfighting tools and a bloodied fighting pit (see HUMANElines Issues 268 ). The dogs, which authorities failed to seize during the raid, were later sold off by Fiarris, most likely to other dog fighters and further cruel fates.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
1. Contact the Newton County District Attorney, and ask him to vigorously prosecute those involved in the Covington dog fighting ring where 123 were arrested.

2. Many of you may have written to the judge in this case back in November, when Fiarris’ sentencing was originally scheduled. Given the lengthy delay in sentencing, a resurgence in letters to the judge is now needed to ensure that Fiarris does not get off lightly for causing so many dogs to suffer such terrible pain and fear. Respectfully urge the Judge to give Fiarris considerable jail time (he faces a maximum ten years for each felony charge) for his cruel crimes.

3. Contact your members of Congress and ask they cosponsor H.R. 1532/S. 736, the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act. This legislation would set felony level penalties for interstate transport of fighting animals and ban the transport of the knives and ice pick like gaffs that are attached to the heels of animals used in cockfights. You can find out who represents you in the U.S. Congress by visiting http://www.congress.org or by calling the HSUS at 202-955-3668.

OREGON RESIDENTS—SPEAK OUT AGAINST TRAPPING!
Wildlife who are caught in steel-jawed leghold traps and snare traps suffer unspeakable torment, often gnawing off their own limbs, slowly hemorrhaging to death, or breaking their teeth and bones while struggling to escape. This suffering is compounded by the length of time that the animals linger in the traps—determined by the state-mandated “trap check” times. On Friday, February 6, the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Commission will decide the length of time a coyote or other type of predatory animal is allowed to spend in a trap before being killed. In 30 states, there is a mandatory 24-hour trap check time. Oregon wildlife officials, however, are considering either a 48-hour minimum trap check time or a 72-hour trap check time. The 72-hour rule, which is being pushed by trappers and hunters in the state, will certainly precipitate terrible, protracted suffering for countless wild animals in Oregon if it is adopted.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
If you are an Oregon resident, you can speak out against some of the cruelest aspects of trapping!
1. Contact the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission and urge them to adopt a minimum 48-hour trap check requirement for ALL animals and ALL types of traps.

2. Attend the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Commission Meeting on February 6, 2004. The trappers will be attending in full force (The Oregon Sportsmen’s Show is being held in the same building on the same day as the meeting!), and show your opposition to trapping. BAN FUR-FARMING IN SWEDEN!
A proposal to ban fur farming is expected to come up in the Swedish Parliament within the next few months. To boost this proposal and gain a majority support in Parliament, Swedish anti-fur activists are circulating a petition to ban fur farming. Once 100,000 signatures are gathered, activists will present this petition to key politicians. If you’d like to help Sweden join a spate of other European countries—including Great Britain, Scotland, most of Austria, and Northern Ireland —go to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/358991693 and sign the petition!
