A farmer grabbed a vet by the throat and held her head under a pit of slurry
until she feared she would drown, a court heard yesterday.
Susan Potter said she felt terrified as Roger Baker pushed her face under
the foot-deep mix of mud, animal faeces and urine. She told the court she
"fought like a wildcat", kicking him in the groin and lashing at his face,
but he would not let her go.
"At the time it felt like he held me under for a long time although in
reality it was probably only a few seconds," she told the jury. "It was long
enough for me to think that I must not breathe and that I had to hold my
breath or I would drown."
Mrs Potter, 46, said her ordeal began when she and a colleague visited
Baker's farm at Ventongimps, near Truro in Cornwall, last February to
investigate claims of animal mistreatment. They had just found a dead lamb
hanging in a tree when they were ambushed by Baker, the court was told.
