A local group that specializes in rescuing cocker spaniels has stepped
forward to find homes for 15 dogs caught up in an alleged puppy breeding scam in
West Texas.
A number of volunteers took in the dogs Friday night around midnight during
the raging storm that moved through the area, said Judi Fetters, treasurer for
Cocker Spaniel Rescue of East Texas/Houston.
"We were unloading dogs in the middle of that rainstorm, but we're diehards,"
Fetters said.
The 15 dogs were among about 50 puppies and adult dogs allegedly paid for and
promised to some Virginia residents but that were never delivered.
According to news reports out of Amarillo, a woman named Monica Arnold sold
the puppies then skipped town with the cash and the animals.
