The chickens were judged on Jan. 9. One disappeared last week, the other
disappeared Sunday night. The stock show representative says McFarland will still
receive two ribbons and $15 for his first-place prize. He says he plans to
donate the money to the horse rescue farm.
McFarland and other volunteers save horses from slaughter, nurse many of them
back to health and teach them to be more comfortable around people. There are
more than a dozen chickens on the farm. The volunteers take care of them and
take home fresh eggs.
McFarland mom, Sandy McFarland, says the farm has taught the children a lot
of lessons about life and that's one of the reasons they would all like to see
the chickens returned.
"Bring them back, they're his pets," she said. "You can see, they're just
here to take care of and for the kids to learn how to take
care of - that's what we use them for."
