AnnMarie Cross poses with her daughters pony, Sandy, the only permanent
resident at Crosswinds Equine Rescue.
If horses could speak, they would probably name AnnMarie Cross is their
guardian angel.

Cross runs Crosswinds Equine Rescue on her property near Tuscola, where she
saves injured horses or horses that are about to be auctioned off for
slaughter. She rehabilitates them and often finds people who would like to adopt them.

"Some of them are sick," said Cross. "A lot of them are injured. Some of them
are surrendered, others we pick up at local auctions."

A one-year-old horse got tangled in barbed wire so it was sent to the rescue
farm. Another horse had a scar the size of a dinner plate on his back and was
very underweight. It is believed this horse was involved in a car wreck.
