When confronted by a mountain lion, don't follow instinct and run -- the best
response instead is to stand tall, talk loud and, if attacked, stick a finger
in the animal's nose.
That advice came Sunday from Barbara and Rob Dicely, an Occidental couple who
own and display wild cats for educational purposes, when they showed their
big cats and talked about mountain lions at the Sebastopol Community Center.
Barbara Dicely pointed out that a person in the wilderness is safer from
mountain lions than a person in the city of Oakland is from other people. Only 17
people have been killed by mountain lions in the past 100 years in California,
while 114 died at the hands of others last year in Oakland.
