Ministers will today announce plans on how to manage the country's growing
population of deer after research found the animals are involved in over
30,000 traffic collisions each year.
The research carried out by the Department for the Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (Defra) also found that the accidents kill up to 20 motorists each
year. And deer of at least one species are believed to be present in nearly
every 10 kilometre grid square of England and Wales, as well as Scotland.
Ministers will later today announce a public consultation document on how to
manage the deer, and managed culling is one of the likely options. A Defra
spokesman said: "The Department's view on deer management is that the best
long-term solution to reduce the damage caused by deer is to achieve an adequate
cull each year and so reduce the local deer population.
"We believe that this is best achieved through a wider, coordinated cull
undertaken by a local Deer Management Group (DMG) rather than on an ad-hoc basis
by individuals."
