CARBONDALE -- Greyhounds who've made the transition from racing dog to pet
take retirement seriously.

"He likes to sleep," Donna Lach of Carbondale said about her race dog turned
pet, Danny. "His favorite thing is to lie on the couch with his feet in the
air."

"I think the big misconception is that they have a lot of energy," said Jean
Kelley of Carbondale. "They are big couch potatoes. They are very loyal. This
is a breed that really attaches to people. Doc follows me wherever I go in the
house. He truly is a companion."

Bill Kelley, no relation to Jean, raises and races greyhounds. Though he
lives in Carbondale, most of his dogs live at the tracks where they race.

"A greyhound starts racing at 16 to 18 months old, and they retire at about 5
years old," Bill Kelley said. "They peak at about 21/2 to 31/2 years old."
