MACCLENNY, FL -- A Saturday morning hunting trip in Northwest Baker County
ended abruptly when police say a father accidentally shot his son.
According to the Baker County Sheriff's Department, 14-year-old Dennis
Plucknett was shot in the head after his father mistook him for an animal.
"He had a black toboggan cap on, and apparently he was just moving his head
around and that is what the father saw," said Baker County Sheriff Joey
Dobson.
The shooting took place at the Oak Hill Hunting club a little after nine in
the morning. Witnesses told police Alex wondered off from the rest of the
party.
A police investigation revealed the father was about 225 yards away from his
son when the shot went off. The son was crouched down inside a ditch, and
his head was the only thing visible.
The Sheriff said, "The father fired one round of a 308 rifle into the back
of the sons head."
The case will be reviewed by the state attorney's office, but, police
believe charges will not be filed.
