OCALA - Some of his neighbors didn't know exactly how many pit bulls Shelby
Davis owned. All they knew was that they were afraid.

Anyone's best guess was that at least five pit bulls resided at Davis' home
in a quiet working class neighborhood a block off Jacksonville Road and just
outside the northeast Ocala city limits.

And when any of Davis' dogs got loose, anxiety ran with them, the residents
testified at a recent public hearing before the Marion County Code Enforcement
Board.

Some dreaded being outside and kept on guard, even in front of their own
homes. They knew others who shut themselves in. A few resorted to violence.

They came to the board on Tuesday seeking help. They had filed complaints
seeking to have Davis' dogs declared "dangerous" under the county code. This was
the dogs' day in court, so to speak, with the board sitting as the jury.

Jill Lancon, carries a sedated puppy to be euthanized with an overdose of
sodium pentobarbital.
