DURHAM, Conn. -- When a dog broke into Diane Alderete's chicken coop early
this month and killed four of her pet hens, the town responded with its
checkbook open.

Alderete received $18 - $4.50 for each chicken - under a 78-year-old
Connecticut law allowing animal owners to recoup losses from dog attacks.

Though the dog attack occurred on Alderete's property and the dog is believed
to have been a stray, the law calls for the town to make the payments. The
town can recover its money if officials determine the owner of the offending
dogs.
