The nurses and technicians inside the shiny white bloodmobile spend the day
collecting the "gift of life" from a dozen or more slightly nervous but
good-natured blood donors.

As happens with any Red Cross blood drive, the donors get snacks and praise
for their Good Samaritan efforts. There's just one big difference: These donors
are dogs.
Since 1991, the Penn Animal Blood Bank in Philadelphia has taken its
specially equipped dogs-only bloodmobile to blood drives organized by breeders, dog
clubs, veterinarians and others throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware
and Maryland. In 2002, a second, $80,000 clinic-on-wheels went into operation.

The vehicles and blood bank are operated by the University of Pennsylvania
School of Veterinary Medicine to ensure that an adequate supply of blood is
available to treat critically ill and injured animal patients at the school's
teaching hospital.
The university says these are the first and only animal bloodmobiles in the
nation.
