WAUSAU — Nearly two years after a fatal brain disease was discovered in
wild deer in southwestern Wisconsin, the ailment has been found no farther
north than Sauk and Columbia counties.

“The potential for this to show up in central Wisconsin in the wild
population is very real,” said University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor
Judd Aiken, who for nearly two decades has researched the prion
afflictions commonly called mad cow and chronic wasting diseases.
