Chronic wasting disease experts fear the fatal brain disease could crop up in
the wild in a new spot in the state -- Portage County.
Nearly two years after it was first discovered in wild deer in southwestern
Wisconsin, the ailment has been found no farther north than Sauk and Columbia
counties just north of Madison. Portage County is right in the center of the
state and about 100 miles away from Mount Horeb where the first deer with
chronic wasting disease east of the Mississippi River was discovered.
