GREAT FALLS, Mont. (CP) - The discovery of a case of mad cow disease in
the United States last month hasn't had the serious economic impact many
expected, say some ranchers in Montana.

"It hasn't made the impression we thought it would on the market, so we've
seemed to weather the storm all right," said Robert Gruel, 78, who runs
about 2,500 head of cattle on his ranch just south of Great Falls.

The U.S. beef industry was plunged into uncertainty once the first
domestic case of the disease showed up in Washington state last month.

Many people expected the American beef industry would suffer the same kind
of problems that were experienced in Canada last year, when an Alberta cow
tested positive for the disease and all major export markets for Canadian
beef and cattle, including the U.S., were closed and prices fell.
