Two eddies of good news surfaced recently, forming a welcome counter-current
against a stream of environmental woes.
First, Gov. Bill Owens bypassed several really terrible candidates for the
top natural resources job in Colorado. Instead, he picked a highly qualified guy
who truly cares about wildlife, parks and the like.
Almost everyone who knows Russ George, a former GOP legislator from Rifle,
praised his selection as executive director of the Colorado Department of
Natural Resources. The DNR includes the Division of Wildlife (DOW), State Parks, and
seven other divisions and agencies. The DNR chief also serves on, and sets
the tone of, Great Outdoors Colorado, the state's primary way of acquiring open
space, parks and wildlife habitat.
