AR-News: (US PA) Is life today too tough for Bambi?

Whenever the issue of deer comes up, visions of Bambi dance through my head.

As you can guess, I'm not a hunter. I'm the person who sees captions over the
heads of dead does that read, "I was Bambi's mommy."

This doesn't mean I refuse to eat venison on the grounds of cruelty. No, I
reject venison because it tastes gamy to me no matter what recipe with wine is
used.

But when talk arises about reducing the herd because deer are decimating the
oak tree crop or colliding with too many cars, I immediately think of Walt
Disney and remember my own tears when Bambi's mother dies in the classic film.

This 1942 movie is only 70 minutes long. Yet, the portrayal of the life
cycle, the beauty and primitivism of nature and the cruelty of hunters were such a
departure for the cartoonist-animator that this movie was an instant hit.

Upon release, it also was the center of conflict, as the American Rifle
Association fought against the image of the hunter as the villain of the piece.
