Before Freeway became Freeway, the poodle had food and shelter.
But the other vital part of the dog's life - love - left.
That was apparent when she was found on the side of a rural road standing
next to a bag of dog food and another dog that was dead.
Someone spotted Freeway and took her to the Wichita County Humane Society
where she was cleaned up and led to cages with scores of other dogs. About a
quarter of them arrived under similar circumstances.
Freeway's story is a common one, animal advocates say, where dog or cat
owners decide they can no longer afford or tolerate their pet and drive them to a
rural area near water hoping the animal finds a new owner or learns to survive
in the wild.
But that rarely happens.
"All it's going to do is send them to a bad death," said Carlton Story, who
has had many abandoned dogs stray to his doorstep near Lake Kickapoo. "It's
really sad."
His daughter in Electra also has had to carry abandoned dogs to the Humane
Society, he said.
"I don't think people really realize it," Story said. "They just think if
they leave them out around some houses and that someone takes care of them and
that's just not the case."
