Wildlife officials believe grizzly No. 144, the mother bear that was shot in
the head in November 2002 and then didn't hibernate, has settled in for a
winter nap this year.
"There is no reason to believe that she didn't successfully den," said Mike
Madel, a grizzly bear management specialist with Montana Fish, Wildlife &
Parks.
Grizzly bear no. 144 gained national attention after she charged a Missoula
hunter and survived a rifle shot to the head in the third week of November
2002.
