[opinion from Central Maine Daily Sentinel]
I know this newspaper ran a headline last week saying "Vegetarians Urged
to Keep Low Profile in Mad Cow Woes," but I can't resist.
It was, after all, the image of the "downer" cow that convinced me, all
those years ago, that I didn't need meat anymore. I had read about how
cattle too sick or injured to walk were nonetheless brought into the
nation's slaughterhouses. I was disgusted. Now the term "downer cows" has
entered into common usage. Surely it's not foolish for me to think others
will follow my path.
...
I've found the discussions of the farm-to-table process on TV and radio so
upsetting that I've had to turn them off. I hope others do too, but with
this thought: "If I can't accept the way animals are raised and
slaughtered for meat, then what am I doing eating them?"
...
Once again, we have had a glimpse through the slaughterhouse window. Let
it be our call to action, on both personal and political levels. We owe it
to ourselves -- and the animals.
