New Year's Eve fireworks sent many dogs running. The Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Johannesburg says it has about 400 animals
that were abandoned and hurt. They range from six week old puppies to cats and
pigs.
Petrus Lombard, a spokesperson for the SPCA, says a lot of dogs have been
frightened from the fireworks. A cat was one of them. It has been burned so badly
that the vet has nicknamed her Cinders. It has to be given morphine to ease
the gnawing pain.
Abandonment is also a problem. The SPCA says many owners left dogs in their
back yards over Christmas without food or water.
