RACE READY:
Carol Homfeld of Redding has a chance to ride on a dog sled for the first 11
miles of the Iditarod race in Alaska. Homfeld's daughter, Colleen Hayden of
Tok, Alaska, put a bid in the Idita-rider Musher Auction for her mom to have the
chance to ride in the famous race.

I t isn't the type of Christmas present Carol Homfeld would ever ask for. In
fact, she had probably never given it much thought.
But when Colleen Hayden said she'd submitted a bid for her 83-year-old mother
to ride in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska on March 7, Homfeld did
what the mushers will do: Run with it.
Actually, Homfeld won't run the whole 1,150 mile race, just the first 11
miles in the Idita-Rider program that gives everyday people a chance to run with
the big dogs — or at least stay with the pack.
Idita-Riders receive an exclusive ride in the sled basket of an Iditarod
musher and take part in numerous pre-race functions.
