AR-News: (AU/US) US beef industry braces for mad cow backlash

MARK BANNERMAN: Welcome to the program, I'm Mark Bannerman.

Despite the assurances of US President George W Bush, there's little doubt
American beef producers are bracing themselves for a major international
consumer backlash after the discovery of BSE or mad cow disease in one
animal just before Christmas.

Of course it's not so long ago that Britain's farmers were bulldozing
thousands of dead cattle into mass graves.

That outbreak of BSE sent many farmers in the UK to the wall as meat
buyers refused to take the chance on contracting the human form of mad cow
disease.

But what does this latest scare mean for our beef producers?

Australia has some of the most stringent livestock testing and tracking
technology in the world.
