FORT LAUDERDALE -- Amid a carnival atmosphere of spectators, vessels of
every stripe -- from million-dollar yachts to work barges to humble kayaks
-- transformed the Intracoastal Waterway into a river of light Saturday
night as the Winterfest Boat Parade made its annual 10-mile trek.
And yes, Virginia, there is a panther. And a cougar, and Bengal tigers.
While many a boat along South Florida's waterways could charitably be
referred to as a floating circus, Swap Shop owner Preston Henn's barge
more than lived up to the moniker.
Despite permitting problems and the specter of animal-rights protests,
millionaire Henn provided the rented wildlife (no room for the expected
elephant), at a cost of $30,000.
The flea market owner defied animal-rights activists by sailing with the
big cats, but, though present, they were mostly a no-show. The flames and
roaring motorcycles of the circus acts kept the edgy beasts unseen for
much of the parade.
