FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
National Humane Group Offers $1,000 Reward for Conviction in San Antonio Cat Mutilations
SACRAMENTO, California (December 10, 2003) - United Animal Nations today
offered a Zig Zag Memorial Reward of $1,000 for information leading to the
arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for mutilating
and killing several cats in the Colonies North neighborhood of San Antonio,
Texas.
San Antonio Animal Care and Control officials are investigating these
horrifying crimes and looking for the perpetrators. The remains of the
first mutilated cat were found a year ago. Authorities report that body
parts were strewn across a lawn. The second cat was found carved up -
missing its head and entire body below the front legs - in October in a
trashcan. A third cat was just found in the last week. That cat was the
victim of blunt force trauma to the head and then gutted from belly to neck.
Ed Wright, an Officer with Animal Care and Control Officer is investigating
these crimes. "We need folks from the neighborhood with any information on
these or any other suspicious situations to come forward," Officer Wright
said.
Already the case is growing, but unfortunately only in potential casualties,
not through promising leads. In response to recent news reports about these
cats, a Colonies North resident has reported that her cat was mutilated back
in December 2001 and her veterinarian's autopsy of the animal at the time
confirmed that the cat had suffered from human-inflicted torture.
Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to contact San Antonio
Animal Care and Control at (210) 207-6664. Anonymity will be respected.
"We are deeply saddened to hear about these poor cats," said UAN President
Mercedes Chatfield-Taylor. "The perpetrators must be punished in order to
demonstrate that such violence against animals, against any living being,
will be not be tolerated in our society."
UAN's reward offer will be added to a local reward fund for information
leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for these
crimes. Including UAN's pledge, the reward now stands at $2,700. The San
Antonio rescue group Wags to Whiskers (wagstowhiskers.org) is acting as
custodian of the reward money. Pledges can be sent to the group at P.O. Box
91094, San Antonio, Texas 78209.
UAN's Zig Zag Memorial Reward was created in 2000 and named for the dog Zig
Zag who was burned, beaten and tortured for hours before mercifully dying,
is offered in the hopes that it will break the wall of silence and encourage
people to step forward with information.
United Animal Nations is a non-profit national animal advocacy and rescue
organization headquartered in Sacramento, California. For further
information, contact UAN at (916) 429-2457, visit our website at www.uan.org
