Some damning conclusions have been reached in a report on an undercover
investigation commissioned by the Edinburgh based animal welfare campaign group,
Advocates for Animals, (AFA), into the housing conditions of animals for sale
and advice given, in over one third of licensed pet shops in Scotland.
During the summer, (June-August 2003), independent animal welfare researcher,
Jordi Casamitjana investigated a random sample of 87 businesses, 37% of a
total of 233 known to require a Pet Animals licence in Scotland. In addition, a
further 20 establishments were also visited.
These businesses included pet shop chains, (including superstores), garden
centres, smaller pet shops and specialists selling exotics and aquatics.

"As custodians of the planet it is our responsibility to deal with all
species with kindness, love, and compassion. That these animals suffer through human
cruelty is beyond understanding. Please help to stop this madness."
