The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) has appointed an
Australian to the role of president.
The RSPCA's national president, Hugh Wirth, will take up the post next year.
Established in 1981, WSPA uses its $US20 million budget to lobby on animal
welfare issues in nations such as China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea.
Mr Wirth will retain his position as head of Australia's RSPCA, which is
based in Melbourne.
"As custodians of the planet it is our responsibility to deal with all
species with kindness, love, and compassion. That these animals suffer through human
cruelty is beyond understanding. Please help to stop this madness."
-- Richard Gere
