SPRINGFIELD – The state plans to launch a pilot program in Clinton County
that will use satellite technology and the Internet to map out agricultural
assets that are potentially at risk of terrorism.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich pledged Friday to "expeditiously" expand the program
to the state's other 101 counties if it proves to be successful.
"Just as we are one of the nation's leading agriculture producers, we must
also lead when it comes to making sure the nation's food supply is
protected," the governor said in a written release.
San Diego-based Science Applications International Corp., which maintains
an office in Champaign, is getting $22,000 to develop the pilot program,
according to the governor's office.
The first phase of the project involves using satellites to map out the
locations of livestock, grain elevators, food processing facilities, water
reservoirs and related sites.

"Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is, whether its
victim is human or animal, we cannot expect things to be much better in this
world, we cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living
creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight
in killing we set back the progress of humanity." Rachel Carson
