Hunting rules are on target
By Don Sapatkin
Inquirer Staff Writer
Field reports from the first days of hunting season suggest that
Pennsylvania's contentious new regulations will sharply reduce overpopulation - the main
reason for live deer in suburban gardens and dead ones on the road - while
ensuring even more trophies over hunters' mantels.
"I saw four of the nicest buck I've seen in the mountains in a long time,"
said Vernon Young Jr., who spotted the racks in Clinton County. He shot an
eight-pointer closer to his Chester County home on Monday, the main deer season
opener.
The next day, teams of wildlife officials started dropping in on hundreds of
butchers across the state. Working on bloody barrels in freezing coolers, they
tried to determine whether the deer brought in for processing into steaks and
sausage were any different than last year. They had hoped that the males
would be older, meaning they had lived longer and grown larger.

"Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is, whether its
victim is human or animal, we cannot expect things to be much better in this
world, we cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living
creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight
in killing we set back the progress of humanity." Rachel Carson
