The Natural Resources Conservation Service is accepting applications for the
Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program. Landowners may apply at any time;
however, applications received by Jan. 9 will be considered for the 2004 program
year.
Applications received after that date are held until the next evaluation
period.
WHIP provides land users an opportunity to improve wildlife habitat on land
that they own or control by implementing eligible practices at a 75 percent
cost-share rate.
In Kentucky, the primary focus of WHIP is to restore and create early
succesional habitats. Planting native grasses, shrubs, and wildlife-friendly
introduced grasses are eligible practices under Kentucky's 2004 WHIP cost-share
assistance.
Other eligible practices include filter strips; forest stand improvement;
field borders; tree plantings; riparian buffers; wildlife watering holes; and
fencing to exclude livestock from streams, woodland, wetlands, and wildlife
lands.
Applications are evaluated and ranked to determine which projects provide the
most beneficial habitats. To apply, contact your local NRCS office or
biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
