The Gazette
Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. is the latest of Quebec's forest- products firms to
join forces with the World Wildlife Fund of Canada to preserve the diversity
of Canada's woodlands and the creatures that inhabit them.
Steven Price, spokesperson for the WWF, said the federal government has
allocated about 120 million hectares of Canada's forest land to companies, but did
not require them to set aside protected areas within those huge chunks. As a
result, creatures such as the woodland caribou are declining in number because
they don't have the continuous tracts of land they need to roam.
