A VET allegedly told a farmer to kill 30,000 hens in an epidemic by throwing
them alive into a wood chipper.

Gregg Cutler is being probed by animal welfare officers after workers hurled
the squirming birds by the bucket load down the machine's chute.

He denies it was his idea, but maintains it is a good way to kill hens.

The wood chipper cull came at Ward Egg ranch in San Diego after a crisis
meeting which Cutler attended to discuss an outbreak of a disease that stops
hens laying.

He said: "No idea was too crazy to throw out. We were in desperation trying
to deal with this disease. It is instantaneous. There is no suffering."

But Cutler insisted he had not told farm staff to pulp the birds and is
claiming he is being unfairly targeted by animal welfare activists.
