[from Amarillo Globe News]

TURKEY - It doesn't look like anyone will be gobbling up the Tofurky in
Turkey this year.

Despite an invitation from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
to replace their gobblers with a tofu version of the bird, folks in Turkey
seem intent on doing things the old-fashioned way.

"Tofu turkey? I don't think so."

That was Mona Boles' reaction when she was informed of PETA's offer to
come down and serve Tofurky - a soy-based vegetarian alternative to turkey
- to anyone willing to give up the bird. Boles, owner of the Hotel Turkey,
will be cooking up an old-fashioned Thanksgiving for about 40 people and
will be including the standard turkey.
...
The Tofurky tempest has been stirred up by PETA, which sent a letter to
Turkey Mayor Pat Carson asking him to declare an official Tofurky day.
PETA would show its gratitude by sending down its famous "Lettuce Ladies,"
bikini-clad women who would serve Tofurky if the town would give up its
namesake gobbler.

Bruce Friedrich, director of vegan outreach for PETA, said the
tongue-in-cheek offer actually contains a serious message.
